I lived here until about 20 years ago and then I moved to Frederick, Crawford Co Mich and lived there until last March when I came here and have lived with my sister ever since.

I have been married three times. 1st to Wm Jones to whom I was married in Genesee Co Mich August 16 sometime after the war. Jones died in Spurdury County near Foster. He died in Aug (crossed out) don't remember the year. I don't know where he is buried. I was not living with him at time of his death. I never was divorced from him. My second husband was George W. Lawhead. I was married to him at Grayling Crawford Co Mich. I could not give the year, it was on March 24. I lived with him until he died at East Jordan, Mich where he is buried. Henry Leeman is my 3rd husband who lives in Frederick Mich. I was married to him July 24, 1904 at Mt. Pleasant Isabella Co. Mich.

I first knew the soldier Lawhead right here in this neighborhood. We lived together about 13 years. Soldier left two children by me who were under 16 years of age at time of his death.

Ethel Mildred Lawhead is the oldest. She was born in Foster in Ogemaw Co. Mich and she will be 20 years old Oct. 24, 1912 and that would make her born Oct 24, 1892.

Jessie Leuella Lawhead is the youngest and she was born May 22 and was 16 years old last May and that would make her born May 22, 1896.

Yes, he soldier had other children but not by me had them by Emma Stiles, his first wife and had two girls.

Margaret was the oldest and Effie was the youngest. They were grown women married and had children when soldier died. Both had middle names and I think Effie's was May and I think Margarets was Amelia.

Soldier had been married 3 times. His first wife was Emma Stiles who died in Albee Twp this County buried in Albee Cemetery, there is no tombstone at her grave. His second wife was one Helen somebody to whom he was married in Taymouth Genesee Co Mich. He left her, don't think he got any divorce. She is dead so I heard not know when and where. I don't know any of her relatives or where she came from.

It was since my marriage to the soldier that I heard his 2nd wife was dead. Some one told me of her death, don't remember now who it was.

Ethel was born near Foster Ogemaw Co Mich. A Mrs. Transos who was a neighbor of mine was with me at the time. I don't know where she is.

A doctor was with me when Jessie was born. He did live at Roscommon Mich, can't remember his name but he is dead.

I have no record of the dates of their birth, did <unreadable> to put it in the bible. No I never knew soldier by any name than Lawhead, never knew him by name of Loyd.

Well I have heard said soldier had another wife living in Lansing Mich. I told him what I had heard but he denied it. Never had another wife before Emma Stiles, said he never had any other children. I saw him a few times, once or twice when he lived with Emma Stiles. No, I know nothing as to his whereabouts before his marriage to Emma Stiles nor does any here abouts.

My maiden name was Larags. Either I or soldier read a letter from this Lansing Woman asking him for a part of his pension. He said that she was not his wife.

Hernon was our post office in Ogemaw Co Mich. No, my first husband William Jones was not dead when I married soldier, nor was we ever divorced. I left him <unreadable> and just run onto Lawhead and married him. Guess I was crazy for doing such a thing. I heard that Jones was dead while Lawhead was living. I realize that I am not intitled to a pension of widow of soldier. I want it for the children of soldier that's all.

Marriage record #6 of Crawford County Michigan states that George Lawhead, age 60, living in Frederick Mich, born in Ohio to parents James Lawhead and Tempy Gilson married Henrietta Jones, age 50, living in Frederick Mich and born in Mich were married March 23, 1903. The marriage record does not give Henrietta's parents. It does state that both George and Henrietta were previously married once each. Robert McElroy, Justice of the Peace married them, Frank Griffin and Mary Wheeler were witnesses.
Children were: Ethel Mildred LAWHEAD, Jessie Leuella LAWHEAD.

I am 61 years old, housekeeper, P. O. Address Burt, Michigan RD #2.
I am the wife of Stephen Jones and sister of claimant.
From time of our childhood she and I were under each others observation up to 20 years ago and <unreadable> died him I have not seen her until last Feby.

I first knew George W. Lawhead etc. soldier for about 10 years before his first wife Emma Stiles died. I knew her when we were children at school together. I know nothing of soldiers whereabouts before his marriage to Emma Stiles. I was at the funeral of Emma, but I can't remember date of her death.

In about one year after Emma's death soldier married one Helen Vorst, who was quite old don't think she had been previously married. They had no children, never were divorced, just parted, she went away and <unreadable> where she went to was where she is. The aid her some relative but they are dead. Soldier next wife was claimant and she claimant had a living and undivorced husband at the time of her marriage. His names was William Jones and she left him and married Lawhead without going through the formality of divorce.

Emma Stiles Lawhead has two children by soldier: Margaret and Effie.
Soldier had two children under 16 years of age by claimant at time of his death. Ethel Mildered and Jessie Lureen. Ethel will be 20 years old next Oct. she is married, can't give date of birth. Jessie is 16 years old last May. I do not know date of their birth. She is unmarried.

I have no interest in this case. I have heard this deposition read, have freely understood questions asked and my answers was correctly <unreadable>.

According to Marriage Record #3367 of Saginaw County, on August 17, 1884, George Lawhead married Ellen A Bird Vorrheis. George was 38 and Ellen was 53 at the time. Francis W. McNalley, Justice of the Peace performed the ceremony, Philip Fitch and Robert J Morris were the witnesses. There is no record of previous marriage recorded for either George or Ellen. It is assumed that this Ellen A Bird Vorrheis is the Helen Vorst mentioned in George Lawhead's Civil War Pension File.

A mystery: In the 1890 Veterans Schedule for Albee Township, Saginaw County, Michigan there is a listing for Stephen Jones and immediately afterwards is Ellen A. Lawhead Widdowed appearing to be living with James Bird. Both listings appear to be living in Verne, Saginaw County (the corner of Sheridan and Verne Roads in present day Burt Michigan - there was a grocery store there, which is now a house). On the page before this one, the last person enumerated is George W. Lawhead - apparently living in Fosters. Presumably, this means they were living near each other in 1890.
